Can Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) Help You with Pain Relief?

What is PEA?

What if we were to tell you that there is a promising new non-addictive nutraceutical that can help you with chronic pain management? Not only that, it also happens to be a substance that naturally occurs in your body and in foods like milk, soybeans and tomatoes

Introducing Palmitoylethanolamide or PEA, an endogenous fatty acid amide that’s an emerging contender in the treatment of pain (chronic and neuropathic) and inflammation. PEA has also demonstrated an ability to assist in opioid tolerance.

Research suggests that in conditions of chronic pain and inflammation, PEA levels in the body may be reduced, thereby preventing PEA carrying out its normal function. Taking PEA supplements (at levels much higher than those found in foods) may help compensate for this shortage.

What indications can it help with?

Clinical studies have shown that PEA, if taken for at least 3 months, shows maximum effectiveness but you can see results within 2-6 weeks of use. It can be beneficial for people dealing with the following conditions:

Neurodegenerative disorders (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis)

How is it better than other pain management medications?

As mentioned before, PEA is not habit forming like many pain management drugs on the market. It’s natural, so it can be taken in conjunction with other medication with no known interactions. It also doesn’t have any side-effects.

Although PEA is available for purchase without a prescription, we highly recommend that you consult with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.

At Heathershaw’s Compounding Pharmacy, we stock PEA as 300mg capsules, but we can also reformulate it as needed to suit your needs. A typical dosage for pain would be 1 or 2 capsules taken twice daily (600-1200mg total daily dosage).

Like many analgesics, it may not work immediately. It is usually effective after 1-3 weeks of dosing, but treatment should be ceased if no benefit is seen after 3 months.

For any further questions, please call our pharmacists. We’d be happy to help!

Note – This product may not be right for you. Always consult your pharmacist and read the label, including warnings and instructions for use, before consumption. Vitamin and mineral supplements should not replace a balanced diet.
