Vitamin D3 and K2 - The Dynamic Duo
There’s a lot of talk about the importance of calcium for your bone strength, avoiding osteoporosis and increasing bone health. However, simply increasing your calcium intake does not guarantee greater bone strength. For our body to correctly metabolize our calcium intake, it needs help. Vitamin D3 and K2 play an integral role in how our body interacts with active calcium.
How does our body absorb Calcium?
Milk, yogurt, cheese and leafy greens are excellent sources of dietary calcium.
It’s possible to experience calcium deficiency even after incorporating calcium rich foods into the diet. That’s because all the calcium we ingested isn’t absorbed by the body. Calcium absorption takes place in the small intestine and is transported to the bones via the bloodstream.
This is why taking calcium supplements is often recommended and beneficial. Calcium supplements come in 2 forms – carbonate and citrate. Calcium carbonate may be more commonly available and affordable, but absorption depends entirely on the presence of stomach acid. Consequently, calcium carbonate supplements should always be taken alongside food.
Calcium citrate is water soluble and hence more readily absorbed into the bloodstream and can be consumed with or without food.
Adequate absorption and distribution of calcium can depend on several factors like:
- The existing calcium levels in the blood
- The form of calcium (dietary or supplement)
- Small intestine health
- Gastric pH
How do Vitamin D3 and K2 help when combined?
Healthy levels of Vitamin D3 in the blood is also crucial to ensure that calcium is readily absorbed in the small intestine. A deficiency of Vitamin D3 in the body can hinder the formation of the hormone, calcitriol (active vitamin D) leading to poor absorption of calcium. This results in the body taking calcium from its reserves i.e. the bones. This further weakens them and prevents formation of new bone.
Vitamin K2 ensures calcium is transported to the bones and also helps bind excess calcium. It prevents arterial calcification and maintains the integrity of the circulatory system. It activates a protein called osteocalcin, which turns calcium into bone. Put simply, without D3 and K2, calcium cannot do its job effectively.
