Are GLP-1 Agonists Seen as the Easy Way Out?

Semaglutide is helping people manage diabetes and weight, and supporting heart health along the way. So why does it still carry a stigma?

How it works

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It amplifies the effect of a natural gut hormone that's released after eating, which slows gastric emptying, increases feelings of fullness, and supports insulin production to help manage blood sugar. Some research suggests people with obesity or type 2 diabetes naturally release less GLP-1 after meals, which may explain why they feel hungry sooner.

Eligibility in Australia

Semaglutide (Ozempic) is TGA-approved for managing type 2 diabetes. Wegovy has TGA approval for obesity treatment, though availability and PBS subsidy arrangements differ. Off-label use outside these approvals isn't something we'd recommend without your prescriber's guidance, and current supply constraints are a real factor too.

It's rarely medication alone

In major clinical trials, participants also attended regular lifestyle counselling, aiming for a modest daily energy deficit and around 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. Some research suggests medication may reduce the intensity of self-monitoring and goal-setting typically needed to sustain those changes, by directly reducing hunger cues, not by replacing the lifestyle component altogether.

What about side effects?

Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain are the most commonly reported side effects. More serious but less common risks include gallbladder disease and pancreatitis. Doses are usually increased gradually under medical supervision to help manage this.

Given the long-term commitment, lifestyle changes, and cost involved, framing semaglutide treatment as an "easy" shortcut doesn't really reflect what's involved for the people using it.
