Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know.

Answers on compounding, alternative therapies, vaccinations, travel vaccinations and our four Melbourne locations, all in one place.

How do I send a script?

You can send your prescription however suits you best: upload it online via our Send Us Your Script form, email it to us, post it to any of our four locations, drop it in person, or ask your prescriber to send it directly. We'll confirm receipt and let you know once it's ready.

Can you deliver to me, wherever I am?

Yes - we deliver Australia-wide via tracked express courier, with orders placed before 2pm AEDT dispatched the same day. Prescription-only medicines can only be sent to an address registered with your prescription.

Do I need a prescription?

Most of what we prepare - compounded medications, PBS dispensing, and alternative therapies - requires a valid prescription from a registered practitioner. Some over-the-counter compounded products and vaccinations don't need one. Ask us if you're not sure.

What if the medication I need isn't available anywhere else?

That's exactly what compounding is for. If something's been discontinued, is temporarily out of stock, or needs a different strength, flavour or form, we can prepare it to your prescriber's specifications in our on-site labs.

What exactly is compounding?

Compounding is the process of creating a medication tailored to an individual patient's specific needs, things a commercially manufactured product can't do. This might mean changing a dose, removing an allergen, combining multiple medications into one, or creating a formulation (like a cream or lozenge) that doesn't exist commercially. All compounding at Heathershaw's is done by qualified pharmacists and technicians in our modern on-site labs.

Do I need a prescription for a compounded medication?

Yes. Compounded medications that contain prescription-only ingredients require a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner. Your prescriber writes the script to your specific requirements, and we prepare it from there. Some compounded products containing only over-the-counter ingredients may not require a prescription - we can advise you when you enquire.

What if the medication I need isn't available commercially?

That's exactly what compounding is for. If a medication has been discontinued, is temporarily out of stock, needs to be in a different strength or form, or simply doesn't exist as a commercial product, we can prepare it to your prescriber's specifications. Contact us or have your prescriber reach out directly, we'll let you know what's possible.

How long does a compounded medication take to prepare?

Most compounded medications are ready within 1-2 business days of receiving your prescription, depending on complexity and ingredient availability. Some more novel preparations may take longer, and require us to investigate and formulate on your behalf. We'll always give you an accurate time frame when your script is received and confirm the medication's readiness before dispatch.

What forms can compounded medications come in?

We compound in a wide range of forms including capsules, tablets, creams, gels, ointments, oral liquids, troches (lozenges), nasal sprays and suppositories. The right form depends on your medication, your condition, and what your prescriber has specified. If you're not sure, we can advise.

Can you compound for children or pets?

Yes to both. Paediatric compounding is one of our most common requests, children often need lower doses, different flavours, or liquid forms that aren't commercially available. We also compound veterinary medications for pets and other animals. A valid prescription from a registered practitioner (GP or vet) is required in each case.

How do I send my script to get started?

You can send your prescription online via the form on our Compounding page, by email, by post or visit in person at any of our four Melbourne locations, or have your prescriber send it directly to us. Once we receive it, we'll review, confirm the details, and let you know when your medication is ready for collection or dispatch.

What alternative therapies are available at Heathershaw's?

We stock a range of alternative therapies at Malvern Road. Please get in touch with us if you would like to know more.

How do I place an order for an alternative therapy medication?

Start by sending us your prescription, online via our script upload form, by email, phone, post, or in person at any of our four Melbourne locations. Once we have your script, a pharmacist will review it, prepare your medication, and contact you to confirm collection or delivery.

Where can I pick up my medication?

Alternative therapy medications are dispensed from our Malvern Road pharmacy (Glen Iris) and are available for pick up at any of our four locations. We can also arrange express delivery anywhere in Australia, same-day dispatch for orders placed before 2pm AEDT.

Can you deliver alternative therapy medications?

Yes, we deliver Australia-wide via tracked express courier. All deliveries are tracked and carefully packed. Orders placed before 2pm AEDT are dispatched same day. Some medications have specific storage and transport requirements; we'll advise you of these when your order is confirmed. Prescription-only medicines can only be sent to an address registered with your prescription.

Do I need an appointment or a referral?

You don't need an appointment to fill a prescription with us, just send us your script. However, if you don't yet have a prescription or want guidance on whether a particular therapy is right for you, we recommend speaking with a prescriber. Our partner clinic, Total Holistic Clinic, offers $0 initial consults for Heathershaw's patients and can refer you directly to us.

What if I need to see a doctor or get a new prescription?

Our partner clinic, Total Holistic Clinic, works directly alongside our pharmacy. They offer telehealth and in-person consultations, bulk billing is available, and scripts are sent directly to us.

Are alternative therapy medications covered by Medicare or private health?

Most alternative therapy medications are not covered by the PBS. Costs vary by medication. We're transparent about pricing, if you've been quoted elsewhere, talk to us. Some private health funds may offer partial coverage depending on your policy.

What pharmacist consultations are available?

Our pharmacists can assess and treat a range of minor and ongoing conditions on the spot, including urinary tract infections, oral contraceptive resupply, muscle and joint pain, minor skin conditions (like shingles, impetigo and mild plaque psoriasis flare-ups), and absence from work certificates - most without a referral. See our Pharmacy Services page for the full list and eligibility criteria.

Do I need to book a consultation in advance?

Not always. Many pharmacist consultations are available as walk-ins, though this can depend on the day and location. Booking ahead is the easiest way to guarantee your preferred time - contact your nearest Heathershaw's to check availability.

Do consultations cost anything?

Many of our consultations are offered as a free service under Chemist Care Now if you meet the eligibility criteria. Where a fee applies, your pharmacist will let you know upfront before the consult begins.

Do I need a Medicare card for a pharmacist consultation?

It's not always required, but it's a good idea to bring it along, some services ask for your Medicare number for record-keeping, and it can help your pharmacist coordinate with your GP if a referral is needed.

Which vaccinations do you offer?

We offer a full range of vaccinations for ages 5 and over, including seasonal and travel vaccines, all delivered by our accredited pharmacist immunisers. See our Vaccinations and Travel Vaccinations pages for eligibility and destination-specific advice.

Do I need a prescription or referral to get vaccinated?

No referral needed. Our pharmacist immunisers can administer vaccines directly, just walk in or book online in minutes.

How long does a vaccination appointment take?

Most appointments take around 15-20 minutes in total, including a brief safety assessment and the mandatory 15-minute post-vaccination wait.

Are any vaccines free under the National Immunisation Program?

Yes, eligible Australians can receive certain vaccines at no cost through the NIP. Eligibility depends on your age, health status, and circumstances. Ask our pharmacist for guidance or see our NIP Vaccinations page.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

Walk-ins are welcome at all four of our Melbourne locations, subject to availability. Booking ahead is the easiest way to guarantee your preferred time.

What should I bring to my vaccination appointment?

Please bring your Medicare card (if applicable) and any vaccination records you have. Wear loose-fitting clothing for easy access to your upper arm.

Why do travel vaccine risks vary so much by destination?

Travelling overseas can expose you to diseases that are rare or absent in Australia. The risks vary by destination, duration of travel, accommodation type, and the activities you have planned, which is why a personalised consult matters more than a generic checklist.

What happens at a travel vaccination consult?

Our pharmacist immunisers will review your itinerary, assess your vaccination history, and advise on what's recommended or required for your destination. Most travel vaccines can be administered on the spot, and we'll help you plan timing for multi-dose courses well in advance of departure.

Do I need a referral for travel vaccines?

No, book directly with us, anytime. Our pharmacist immunisers can advise on and administer travel vaccines without a referral.

How far in advance should I book?

At least 6 weeks before your departure date. Some vaccines, like Japanese Encephalitis, require multiple doses over several weeks.

Do you administer Yellow Fever vaccines?

Yellow Fever vaccination must be administered at a registered Yellow Fever centre. We can advise on whether it's recommended for your destination and refer you to the nearest registered provider.

Are travel vaccines covered by Medicare or the NIP?

Most travel vaccines are not covered under the NIP and fees apply. Some routine vaccines you may be due for as a booster, like influenza or MMR, may be covered depending on your eligibility. Ask your pharmacist.

Can I just walk in for travel vaccines?

Yes for advice, and for most common vaccines. Some vaccines may need to be ordered in advance, call ahead if you're travelling within the next two weeks.

Can I use my prescription at any location?

Yes, you can drop a script at whichever location is most convenient and we'll handle the rest. PBS is not available at Malvern Road.

Do all locations offer compounding?

Compounding is performed at our Malvern Road hub. You can hand in your prescription at any location and our team will coordinate the formulation, no need to travel to Malvern Road yourself.

Which location should I go to?

If you need compounding or integrative therapies, head to Malvern Road. For the most accessible hours (open 7 days), Burke Road is your best bet. High Street and Wattletree Road are great neighbourhood options for weekday dispensing and vaccinations.

Are you PBS pharmacies?

Burke Road, High Street and Wattletree Road are approved PBS pharmacies, you can fill PBS subsidised prescriptions at all three. Malvern Road is our specialist compounding and integrative hub and operates outside the PBS framework.

Can I send my script without visiting in person?
