Flu vaccination.
Get ahead of flu season.

How it works.

  1. Walk in or book ahead - no referral needed

  2. Brief health check with your pharmacist immuniser

  3. Vaccinated on the spot, then a 15-minute observation

Who is it recommended for?

The flu vaccine is recommended every year for everyone aged 6 months and over. Some people at higher risk of serious illness can get it free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). We vaccinate people aged 5 years and over. Free NIP flu vaccines for children are not available at our pharmacies.

Things to note

  • Private flu vaccinations are available for anyone aged between 5 and 65.
  • The vaccine is updated each year to match the strains expected to circulate.
  • It can be given at the same visit as your COVID-19 vaccine.

Free under the NIP for

  • People aged 65 years and over
  • Pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults
  • Adults with certain medical conditions that increase the risk of complications from flu

A valid Medicare card is needed for free NIP vaccines. Not sure if you qualify? Come in for a quick chat - your pharmacist will check your eligibility on the spot and confirm any costs before proceeding.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need a referral?
No. You can walk in or book directly online. Our pharmacist immunisers can give flu vaccines without a referral.
Why do I need a flu vaccine every year?
Flu viruses change from year to year, so the vaccine is updated each year to match the strains expected to circulate. Protection from the vaccine also fades over time, which is why a yearly dose is recommended.1
When is the best time to get vaccinated?
In most parts of Australia, flu season usually peaks between June and September. Getting vaccinated from April gives your body time to build protection before then, but it is never too late to vaccinate while flu is circulating.1
Who is eligible for a free flu vaccine?

Free flu vaccines are available through the National Immunisation Program for:2

  • People aged 65 years and over.
  • Pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults.
  • Adults with certain medical conditions that increase the risk of complications from flu.

Free NIP flu vaccines for children are not available at our pharmacies. Children can get them from their GP or local council immunisation service.

If you are not eligible, you can still choose to be vaccinated privately. Costs are confirmed before your appointment.

Are there side effects?
Side effects are usually mild and pass within a day or two. The most common are soreness, redness or swelling where the injection was given, tiredness, mild fever and muscle aches. The flu vaccine cannot give you the flu, because it does not contain live virus.1
I'm allergic to eggs. Can I have the flu vaccine?
Most people with an egg allergy, including people who have had a severe reaction, can safely receive the flu vaccine.1 Let your pharmacist know about any allergies during your health check so they can advise what is right for you.
Can I get a flu and COVID-19 vaccine at the same appointment?
Yes. Flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be given at the same visit.1 It is a convenient way to stay up to date with both in a single appointment.
Do you vaccinate children?
We vaccinate children aged 5 years and over as a private service. We do not offer free NIP flu vaccines for children. These are available through your GP or a local council immunisation service.
Can I walk in without booking?
Yes. Walk-ins are welcome at Malvern Road and Wattletree Road, subject to pharmacist availability. If you would like to guarantee a time, you can book ahead online in a couple of minutes.
How long does the appointment take?
Most appointments take under 30 minutes. This includes a brief health check with your pharmacist, the vaccination itself, and a required 15-minute observation period in store afterwards. We recommend arriving 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.

NIP eligibility is subject to current ATAGI and Department of Health and Aged Care recommendations, which are updated periodically. Speak with your pharmacist to confirm current eligibility and recommended dosing schedule for your circumstances. Please arrive 5 minutes before your appointment. A 15-minute observation period is required after vaccination.
