How it works.

  2. Brief health check with your pharmacist immuniser

  3. Vaccinated on the spot, then a 15-minute observation

Who is it recommended for?

Pneumococcal disease is a bacterial infection that can cause pneumonia, meningitis and blood infections. Older adults, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and people with certain medical conditions are at higher risk, and can get a free vaccine under the National Immunisation Program (NIP).

Things to note

  • Adults who are not eligible for a free vaccine can still choose to be vaccinated.
  • The number of doses you need depends on your age, health and vaccination history.
  • Your pharmacist will check your history on the Australian Immunisation Register.

Free under the NIP for

  • Adults aged 65 years and over
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 25 years and over
  • People with certain medical conditions that increase their risk of pneumococcal disease

A valid Medicare card is needed for free NIP vaccines. Not sure if you qualify? Come in for a quick chat - your pharmacist will check your eligibility on the spot and confirm any costs before proceeding.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need a referral?
No. You can walk in or book directly online. Our pharmacist immunisers can give pneumococcal vaccines without a referral.
What is pneumococcal disease?
Pneumococcal disease is caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. It spreads through droplets when someone coughs or sneezes, and can cause pneumonia, meningitis (infection of the lining around the brain), blood infections, and ear and sinus infections. The risk of serious disease is highest in young children, older adults and people with certain medical conditions.1
Who is eligible for a free pneumococcal vaccine?

Free pneumococcal vaccines are available through the National Immunisation Program for:2

  • Adults aged 65 years and over.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 25 years and over.
  • People with certain medical conditions that increase their risk of pneumococcal disease.

Your pharmacist will check your eligibility and vaccination history before your appointment.

How many doses do I need?
It depends on your age, your health and which pneumococcal vaccines you have had before. Many healthy older adults need a single dose, while people with certain medical conditions may need more than one.1 Your pharmacist will check your vaccination history and recommend the right schedule for you.
Does it protect against all types of pneumonia?
No. Pneumonia can be caused by many different bacteria and viruses, including flu and COVID-19. The pneumococcal vaccine helps protect against the types of pneumococcal bacteria that most commonly cause serious disease. Staying up to date with your flu and COVID-19 vaccines can also help reduce your risk.
Can I have it at the same time as my flu vaccine?
Yes. Pneumococcal vaccines can be given at the same visit as flu and COVID-19 vaccines in adults.1 Your pharmacist will confirm what is right for you.
Are there side effects?
Side effects are usually mild and pass within a couple of days. The most common are pain, redness or swelling where the injection was given, tiredness, headache and muscle aches.1 Your pharmacist will walk you through what to expect before your vaccination.
Can I walk in without booking?
Yes. Walk-ins are welcome at Malvern Road and Wattletree Road, subject to pharmacist availability. If you would like to guarantee a time, you can book ahead online in a couple of minutes.
How long does the appointment take?
Most appointments take under 30 minutes. This includes a brief health check with your pharmacist, the vaccination itself, and a required 15-minute observation period in store afterwards. We recommend arriving 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.

NIP eligibility is subject to current ATAGI and Department of Health and Aged Care recommendations, which are updated periodically. Speak with your pharmacist to confirm current eligibility and recommended dosing schedule for your circumstances. Please arrive 5 minutes before your appointment. A 15-minute observation period is required after vaccination.
