What is oral contraceptive resupply?
If you're already taking an oral contraceptive and you've run out, or your prescription has expired, our pharmacists can assess your situation in a private consultation and, where appropriate, resupply your oral contraceptive without you needing to see a GP first. Under the Victorian Government's Chemist Care Now program, eligible patients can access this service directly through the pharmacy. This is a resupply service for an established oral contraceptive, not a new prescription or emergency contraception.
Do I need a referral to get a resupply?
No. Under the Victorian Government's Chemist Care Now program, our pharmacists can assess and, where appropriate, resupply an eligible patient's existing oral contraceptive directly - no GP visit or referral needed.
Am I eligible for a resupply consult?
Generally, you'll need to be aged 16-50 and based in Victoria, taking the oral contraceptive solely for contraception, prescribed a low-risk pill by a GP or nurse practitioner within the last two years, and have no new symptoms or health changes since your last pack. You're still eligible even if you've run out of repeats or your script has expired, as long as it was issued within the last two years - though not all oral contraceptive types can be resupplied this way. Your pharmacist will check your eligibility with you during the consult and confirm your options.
What happens during the consultation?
Your pharmacist will take you into a private consultation room, explain how the service works, and ask for your consent before going ahead. They'll then ask about the oral contraceptive you're currently taking, your relevant health history, and check for any new symptoms since you last filled your prescription. If you're eligible, they can resupply your oral contraceptive on the spot. If not, they'll explain why and help you arrange a GP appointment.
What do I need to bring?
Bring your Medicare card and any concession card you hold, along with details of any other medications you're taking. If you're after more of your current oral contraceptive, bring your old prescription, or the pack or packaging it came in - this helps your pharmacist confirm exactly what you're taking, especially if you're not a regular patient at our pharmacy.
Will I see a pharmacist in a private room?
Yes. Every consultation takes place in a private consultation room, so you can talk through your healthcare needs somewhere quiet and confidential.
Are all oral contraceptive brands covered by this service?
This service covers resupply of oral contraceptives generally, subject to your pharmacist's assessment and professional judgement. Bring your current pack or packaging to your consult so your pharmacist can confirm exactly what you're taking.
Does this service work the same way outside Victoria?
This page describes the service as offered at our Melbourne pharmacies under the Victorian Government's Chemist Care Now program. Pharmacist prescribing rules for contraception vary between Australian states and territories, so eligibility criteria may differ if you're outside Victoria.
Is this the same as getting a new prescription?
No. This service is for continuing an oral contraceptive you're already established on - it isn't for starting a new type of contraception, and it isn't emergency contraception. If you want to start or switch oral contraceptives, your pharmacist will refer you to a GP.
How much does it cost?
For eligible patients, the pharmacist consultation under Chemist Care Now is provided at no cost - the same as if you'd seen a bulk-billing GP. You'll pay no more than the standard PBS co-payment for any medicine supplied, so there's no extra cost for accessing care this way. As this isn't a PBS-funded prescription, payments don't count towards your PBS Safety Net, and if a medicine isn't listed on the PBS you'll pay full price, the same as you would with a GP prescription. Your pharmacist will confirm eligibility and any costs before proceeding.
Do I need to book?
No booking needed. Just walk in at Malvern Road or Burke Road. Coming soon to High Street and Wattletree Road. See all
Melbourne locations.
What if I'm not eligible for a resupply?
If a resupply isn't appropriate - for example if you're starting a new oral contraceptive, have new symptoms, or fall outside the eligible age range - your pharmacist will explain why and refer you to a GP for further care.
Which locations offer this?
Chemist Care Now consultations are currently available at Malvern Road and Burke Road, walk-in only. They are coming soon to High Street and Wattletree Road.
Will I get a follow-up health check?
Your pharmacist may suggest a follow-up if it's clinically appropriate - for example, to review how you're going before your next resupply, or to recommend a GP visit for a routine check. They'll let you know at the end of your consult if anything further is recommended.
