Questions people actually ask

Are there any costs?
Most Chemist Care Now consultations are free. However, there will be a cost for any medication you receive from your pharmacist — medications are not PBS-subsidised under this program.

For travel healthcare consultations and vaccinations, a consultation fee may apply, and you will be charged the cost of any vaccines given. Ask about any costs before starting your consultation.
Do I still need a prescription?
You do not need a prescription to access Chemist Care Now services. However, for resupply of your oral contraceptive you will need some evidence of what you are currently taking. Pharmacists can only treat certain conditions - for all other treatments you will need a prescription from your doctor as usual.
Are there age limits?
Some treatments have age limits. Speak to your pharmacist about what treatment is right for you, or if you need to visit your GP instead.
How long does it take?
Your consultation will take about 15 to 30 minutes.
What should I expect when I visit?
To make sure you get the right care, your pharmacist will ask a few questions before and during your consultation — including things like your age, symptoms, and medical history — to help them decide whether treatment is suitable.

The consultation takes place in a private consulting room. Your pharmacist will explain how Chemist Care Now works and ask for your consent before proceeding.

If treatment is suitable, they will provide you with the medication you need. While your pharmacist can help with Chemist Care Now treatments, your GP remains the best person to see about your overall health and any serious conditions.

Please bring any medications you are currently taking, your Medicare card if you have one, and any concession cards you hold.
Do I need a Medicare card?
No — you don't need a Medicare card to access Chemist Care Now. If you do have one, please bring it with you, along with any concession cards you hold.
Do I need to make an appointment?
No. Chemist Care Now consultations are walk-in only. Contact your preferred Heathershaw's location if you would like to confirm what treatments are available.
Is it safe to get treatment at a pharmacy?
Yes. Pharmacists undertake additional training to provide Chemist Care Now treatments and follow clinical management protocols developed by the Victorian Department of Health in consultation with medical and pharmacy experts. These protocols are based on international best practice.
What conditions can a pharmacist prescribe for?
Under Chemist Care Now, our pharmacists can assess and prescribe for: urinary tract infections (UTIs), oral contraceptive resupply (oral contraceptive, vaginal ring, depot injection), acute mild muscle and joint pain, shingles and impetigo, mild plaque psoriasis flare-ups, and travel vaccines. Consultations are free - prescribed medication, recommended products, and vaccines are charged separately.
Which locations offer Chemist Care Now consultations?
Currently Malvern Road and Burke Road, walk-in only. They are coming soon to High Street and Wattletree Road.
What if my condition turns out to be more serious?
Our pharmacists will always refer you to a GP or appropriate specialist if your condition is outside the scope of what can be safely treated under the program. Your safety comes first.
