Questions people actually ask

What is a urinary tract infection?
A urinary tract infection happens when bacteria get into the bladder or urethra, causing irritation and infection. UTIs are common - particularly in women - and most uncomplicated cases can be assessed and treated quickly by a pharmacist, without needing to see a GP first. Under the Victorian Government's Chemist Care Now program, our accredited pharmacists can assess your symptoms and, where appropriate, prescribe treatment directly. For eligible patients, the consultation is free - medicines and treatment are charged separately.
Do I need a referral for a UTI?
No. Under the Victorian Government's Chemist Care Now program, our pharmacists can assess and, where appropriate, prescribe treatment for uncomplicated UTIs directly - no GP visit or referral needed.
Is UTI treatment really free?
For eligible patients, the pharmacist consultation under Chemist Care Now is provided at no cost. Medicines and any prescribed treatment are charged separately. Your pharmacist will confirm eligibility and explain any costs before proceeding.
Do I need to book?
No booking needed. Just walk in at Malvern Road or Burke Road. Coming soon to High Street and Wattletree Road. See all Melbourne locations.
What if I've had recurring UTIs?
Recurring or complicated UTIs are outside the scope of pharmacist-only treatment. Your pharmacist will assess your history and, if needed, refer you to your GP for further investigation.
What if my symptoms don't match a typical UTI?
If your symptoms are more serious, or don't fit the criteria for pharmacist treatment - for example fever or back pain - your pharmacist will refer you to a GP or urgent care rather than prescribe.
Can men or children be treated at the pharmacy for a UTI?
Chemist Care Now UTI treatment is currently limited to women aged 18-65 with uncomplicated symptoms. Men and children with UTI symptoms should see a GP.
Which locations offer this?
